Feed your goat

It's so tempting and so easy to focus on the things you are good at. Our ego wants us to do that.

But getting stronger, getting better is all about feeding your goat.

Your goat is that thing that you hate -- that movement that makes you want to skip when you see it come up in the workout. For a lot of people it's double unders or burpees or running or snatches. Everybody has at least one.

Avoiding these movements might save you some discomfort for a moment but it will eventually come back to haunt you. Everything we do overlaps and if you always skip box jumps it'll affect, in a bad way, your swings, your cleans and your pull ups. You can run but you can't hide.

So how do you overcome this emotional block, this fear? Start easy. Ask yourself, "Am I willing to entertain the idea of liking this movement someday?" You don't have to like it, you don't have to promise to like it. You're willing to consider  the notion of liking it. It's the first step. Later you actually think about liking it. Then, you get to where you don't hate it. See the pattern? Baby steps, Bob.

This works with everything. Work, the neighbors, any onerous task. Try it and see. Or at least think about trying it...
