"People in pain...

What a marvelous machine...

What a marvelous machine...

...make bad decisions." This quote from the investigative journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin, author of a new book, Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery describes the starting point for many into the teeth of the "back pain industrial complex".  Sounds funny until you know that Americans spend $100 Billion on back pain every year.

Bad news is that most supposed remedies don't work. Spinal fusion surgery, one of the most common, costs an average of $80,000, is effective only 35% of the time, carries a ton of risks not the least of which is infection, recovery from anesthesia can take a year or more, the risk of addiction to pain killers, especially Vicodin and Oxycoton, is sky high and 99 out of 100 surgeons who were asked whether they’d elect to have lumbar fusion surgery if it were recommended to them said “absolutely not.”

Why do so many people opt for this obviously ineffective and dangerous solution? They. Want. Relief. It's hard to live your life when you're in constant pain. And in America we want it fixed now. Right now.

There are other paths. Some forms of manipulation have shown improvement but usually only temporary and can cause new problems. Everything else from crystals to chakra alignment, legit in their own realms, are just wasting money and time.

So what's a person to do? With 80% of us due to experience some form of back discomfort and disfunction this is a big question. At the top of everyone's list:

Keep moving. It's really that simple. Don't get in that kind of shape in the first place. Get out of your chair, stop smoking, drink less alcohol, eat better and move like you're designed to. We can help with that.

If you've waited too long to prevent disaster the recommendation is slightly different.

Keep moving. (See what I did there?) However, now you'll probably really need some help. Guess what? That's us. We work all day everyday to instruct all our folks in accuracy, balance, coordination, agility, mobility, strength, speed, power, endurance and stamina to create strong, well adjusted, useful and pain free humans. It's a thing. It's who we are. And if we can't help you we know somebody who can.
